Geburtshilfe in Honduras
Ein Projekt zur Stärkung der Würde

In Honduras gibt es zwar die Tradition der Hebamme, leider hat sich diese aber nie in einen Beruf verwandelt.
D. h.: In den Geburtshilfebereichen gibt es keine Hebammen.
Angehörige haben keinen Zutritt sobald die Frauen eingewiesen sind, so sind die Frauen auf sich alleine gestellt.
Sie müssen nach Einweisung auf der linken Seite liegen.
Bei im Schnitt acht Stunden Wehen ist dies eine lange Zeit, mit niemanden der einem die Hand reicht, beruhigend zuspricht, ohne Augenkontakt, Zuspruch, Unterstützung beim Atmen, ohne wohltuende Massage, mit niemanden der einem erklärt, wie die Geburt verläuft. Mit so gut wie keiner emotionalen Unterstützung.
Es gibt wenig Wissen über den Zusammenhang von medizinischem Geburtsverlauf und Psyche.

Die Ziele des Vereins sind:
a) Aufklärungsarbeit über die Geburt
b) Vorbereitung auf die Geburt
c) Weiterbildung für Frauen und Gesundheitspersonal
d) Emotionale Begleitung während der Wehen und der Geburt
e) Begleitung von Frauen mit Totgeburten
f) Emotionale Begleitung und Betreuung von Frauen auf der Wöchnerinnenstation
g )Arbeit mit traditionellen Landhebammen
h) Empirische Forschung zum Erhalt wichtigen Wissens der traditionellen Landhebammen

Volunteering
Empower women, work internationally, improve your skills and provide a much needed service in Honduras:
A great opportunity for midwives, doulas, nurses in training, nurses, medical students and doctors, psychologist students, psychologists, social worker students, social worker, to gain experience and improve conditions for poor women giving birth in a community hospital in La Ceiba Honduras.
The work:
Giving support to women during and after the birthing process.
Participating in prenatal classes (optional).
Providing workshops and education of women.
The hours:
You will work with Silvia, your host, who has done this work for four years, either working together or separately
and chose the number of hours you feel called to work.
Why you are needed:
Presently, there are no prenatal classes in this community, consequently women (often as young as 14) don´t understand the birthing process. The families are not allowed to be with the women during birthing and the medical stuff are busy with other activities. The women need emotional support and advocacy.
The challenge:
Be supportive but also diplomatic and patient. The goal is to change birthing practices over time with modeling of a different way.
The long-term effects:
The experience of birthing affects the life of a woman, her auto esteem, and her bonding with the child. After the traumatic birthing experience some women do not want their babies. If the women experience more support and more love during the birthing process, the relationships within families will improve and women will be more empowered.
It is something simple yet of utmost importance.
Your accommodations:
You will be provided with a lovely room in Silvia´s cozy apartment next to the ocean.
Silvia will help you learn your way around La Ceiba and support your volunteer work.
Side benefits of working in La Ceiba, Honduras. There are three islands, a ferry ride away, for world class scuba diving with very inexpensive dive certification courses, cayos trips for snorkeling in crystal clear waters, river rafting, horseback riding, night clubs, hiking, the Caribbean coast and many other places to explore.
